Death Breath: Stinking up the night

13/10/06  ||  Lord K Philipson

Quite some time ago I read that Nicke Andersson (ex-Entombed and current The Hellacopters member) planned a return to the death metal scene. Knowing how extremely talented a drummer/songwriter he is/was, I liked this announcement and looked forward to what he would create, with huge anticipation. More time passes by and eventually I heard a sample at MySpace. And that sample didn’t do fuck for me. It didn’t groove, the production sounded like crap (sure, old-school, but crap) and there was nothing catchy at all with the short clip in question. I decided to ignore that and just wait for the full-length to arrive coz certainly that one must be good, right? After all, we are talking about a guy who wrote material for albums like “Left hand path” and “Clandestine”... But that sample still had me worried…

When it comes to this disc, the night is not the only thing that stinks I’m sad to say. The moniker stinks, the production stinks and the bigger part of the actual material is a stinker. Sure, there are huge traces of Entombed (the break in “A morbid mind” is just one of all perfect examples) in here as well as (quite a bunch of) hints of Dismember-like riffage. Nicke himself would probably say that bands like Autopsy and Repulsion play a big part too but that means shit to me since those bands suck. And maybe that’s the explanation why I don’t dig Death Breath…

But it’s not all shit:

1. Jörgen Sandström’s vocals on “his” songs (the vocal duties are shared by a few guests such as Jörgen and some other ones I don’t care about) are awesome though, but that should come as no suprise. Jörgen Sandström is the best damn death metal vocalist the world ever saw, and will ever see. The other’s vocals aren’t making me cream all over my monitor, to put it mildly.

2. Nicke’s drumming is still fine after all these years of being away from the death metal scene. I don’t think the production does him justice though. The feeling from albums like “Wolverine blues” and “To ride… and whatever” is not here.

There are a few tracks that passes for decent, at best. “Heading for decapitation”, “Flabby little things from beyond” and “Death breath” comes to mind. Especially the latter could be a left over track from a later Entombed recording. But the downsides of “Stinking up the night” are far too many for me to be able to enjoy this disc.

Death Breath is not just one of the shittiest names for a band ever, they are also a huge fucken letdown that I definitely can do without.

At least the artwork is outstanding.

4 too high hopes out of 10.
